September 15. Day 22

We hung around Seward to do laundry, empty the wastewater and fill up with potable water as we were headed tooose Pass for a two night stay. Arrived late afternoon at Moose Pass Campground. Very tight sites, nut we were the only campers there. We had fire wood for a fire, but the weather had a different idea. It rained the remainder of the day and all night..But we woke up to Sunny skies and went out to discover the area. Moose Pass, population 250, began as a seasonal route for the indigenous Dena’ina people. Its modern history took off during the 1909 gold rush when pioneers built a log roadhouse for weary prospectors, followed closely by the blazing of the Iditarod Trail through the area.As for the name? Local lore says that in 1903, a mail carrier’s dog sled team was completely blocked by a giant, stubborn moose that refused to budge. The settlement grew into an Alaska Railroad camp in 1912. Today, its rugged pioneer spirit is captured by the town’s famous historic waterwheel and its iconic, humorous local sign: “Moose Pass is a peaceful little town. If you have an axe to grind, do it here.”

Moose Pass has its own elementary school, post office, fire Department, Methodist Church and Library. The Train runs the Pass also. Enjoy our pics from Moose 🫎 Pass. We unfortunately have not see any Moose in the wild.
